Happy New Year! The first few school days of 2017 have come to an end and we are off and running this year! We started Harmonica, began our cursive study, and River Forest’s Police Officers visited and the students participated in their “I-Seach” program.
We began a new read aloud this week called “The Hundred Dresses” by Eleanor Estes. On Tuesday, January 31st @ 10:00 we will visit the Chicago Children’s Theatre to view the play. Field Trip Permission slip was sent home yesterday. Please return by Friday, January 20th. I am in need of one volunteer for the trip. Please let me know if you are interested in attending!
Math
Today, the students were assessed on their Module 2: Addition and Subtraction of Length Units. Next, we will begin Module 4: Addition and Subtraction within 200. Your child will learn and be pushed to try and utilize many different strategies during this unit. Please let your child experiment with the different strategies. A big part of learning to utilize efficient strategies is trial and error. Your child will learn to look at a problem and ask, “What addition/subtraction strategy is the most efficient strategy for this problem?” Our goal is to be efficient mathematicians!
Reading
We continued to expand our reading strategies by learning the following strategies: “Facts and Opinions” and “Main Idea and Supporting Details” in a nonfiction (informational) text. We will spend the next few weeks utilizing these strategies.
Science
Tuesday, the students began their Harmonica lessons with John Milan. Over the next six weeks, the students will learn how to play simple songs. The purpose of the lessons is to teach the children about the concept of pitch and volume in a fun, interactive way! On Tuesday, February 14, we will have a small concert in our classroom to show off their hard work. Look for more details to come!
Social Studies
Many of the students are motivated by Mystery State and can’t wait to find out what the state is for the week. This week’s state was…. Maine!
A big shout out goes to Joey, Ryan, Timmy, Aidan, Remy, Rocco, Darcy, Maddie, Jack, and Megan for guessing correctly!
Enclosed in your child’s take home folder is a Scholastic Book order. If your child would like to order books, please order online by Friday, 1/27.
