December has flown by! I can’t believe we have one week of school left. I wanted to remind you that I will begin my commitment as the Roosevelt 7th Grade Volleyball Coach in January. The season will last through the beginning of March. What this means is I will not be available after school for any type of meeting. If you would like to meet, mornings will be the best time to reach me. I am usually at work by 7:00-7:15 am. This will be my last newsletter for the year. I wish you all a Happy and Safe Holiday!
During our Holiday Party the students will be participating in a “Class Book Exchange.” I talked to the children about this activity yesterday. Your child is to pick a book from home, he/she has loved and thinks other 2nd graders would enjoy. Please wrap the book, no name is needed on it, and bring it into class by Thursday, 12/22. The children are very excited for this activity!
Reading
Our read alouds for the month were from one of our favorite authors, Patricia Polacco! We used her stories to help us “Infer the Meaning of Unknown Words.” This is a strategy your child will continue to use throughout his/her life as a reader! When reading with your child and your child comes to a word he/she does not know, have he/she use the picture clues and the words around it to assist in inferring the meaning. Finally, have your child utilize the DICTIONARY to ensure he/she is right!
Next Thursday, your child will receive a Holiday Break Reading Log. If your child completes the reading log according to the directions, they will receive a small prize after break. Due Monday, January 9, 2017.
Math
We began our study of the metric system this week. We will finish up Module 2 after the new year!
Science
This week we began our science lab reports. We have conducted three lesson thus far and the children have learned that light can travel through transparent objects and cannot travel through opaque objects. They also learned Light can reflect! We will finish up our study of light next week.
Upon our start of the new year in January, we will begin our Sound unit which jumpstarts our Harmonica study! Starting Tuesday, January 10 and going for six full weeks, the students will learn how to play the harmonica from an excellent music instructor, John Milan. John Milan has been with Lincoln for the past seven years teaching the second graders how to play the harmonica. At the end of the six weeks, the students will perform a small concert in the classroom for parents and grandparents. More details to come!
Social Studies
This week’s Mystery State is Colorado. Congratulations to the Megan, Joey, Helen, Jack, and Sara Jane for guessing correctly!
