Another week has come to an end! The students are working hard in school and I am enjoying spending each day getting to know them. I can’t believe we have been in school for five full weeks!
Reading
During our Daily 5 time, the students are building their stamina to self-read, write, and listen to reading for about 20 minutes. Earlier this week, the students read the story, “Teacher’s Pets” and with a partner checked his/her understanding of the text while practicing Story Elements.
“Check for Understanding” is a powerful strategy to utilize at home. After reading a few pages, stop your child and ask he/she the following questions:
“Who is this about?”
“What is happening?”
”When and where is the story taking place?”
“Why is it happening?”
“How is it happening?”
Writer’s Workshop
The students are writing “Small Moment” stories. A small moment is a moment in time, such as “a home run in a baseball game,” “scored the winning goal in soccer,” or “how I broke my arm.” The students are zooming in on the moment and using their five senses to make a detailed story. When reading fiction stories, talk about what words they author used, how he/she started/ended the story.
Please help your child see that all around he/she stories can be found. A favorite saying of mine is “ A million small moments happen in a day!”
Social Studies
Our first social studies unit is coming to an end and an exciting and an interesting homework assignment came home with your child, yesterday! It is also posted on my classroom website. Your child’s project is due Monday, October 10th. We will spend all week practicing with one another to prepare for the fair. The Living History Fair will take place on Friday, October 14 from 8:30-9:30. Parents and Grandparents are welcomed to attend. A few questions were asked today about the project. If your artifact is fragile, you may wait to bring it in until Friday morning. If you may have any questions about the project, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Thank you to Mrs. Wienke for coming with us on Tuesday to Naper Settlement. The children had a wonderful time and learned a great deal about life back then. See pictures from the trip on our class photo page!
Math
Today, we took our review unit assessment. The students were assessed on their understanding of solving two digit with one digit addition and subtraction problems.
Conference sign-ups will open on October 10 and remain open until Nov.4. If you cannot make one of the specified times, please let me know as soon as possible!
