January has been a very busy month with a focus on non fiction texts, writing expert books, sound, and learning how to play the harmonica.
Our Mystery State this week was Montana. Congratulations to Joey for our one and only correct guess this week! It was a tough state!
Math
We began our Module 4 unit. During this unit, the children will continue to strengthen their addition and subtraction strategies.
Reading
During the first half of second grade, our main focus was on fiction reading and writing, and as the second half of the year progresses, we are slowly switching our focus to non-fiction reading and writing. We kicked off our study of biographies with Martin Luther King, Jr. The students recorded new learning while reading. Soon, the students will embark on a webquest. They will choose a famous black american, read, and gain information from multiple texts and turn their learning into a project! The students can’t wait to begin!
On Tuesday, January 31st, we will head to the Ruth Page Art Center and see the play “The Hundred Dresses.” It was another loved read aloud and the children can’t wait to see the play in action.
Writing
The students started writing their expert books! On Wednesday, I attended an outstanding PD about Writer’s Workshop. The PD was hosted by the Reading and Writing College in New York. I love sharing with your child what I learned during these and how I can help him/her become more confident writer!
In honor of Valentine’s Day, I ask the students to write letters to a different student in our class each day, complimenting him/her on his/her characteristics. I used this activity last year and the students absolutely loved it! I believe this help builds empathy and appreciation for all. This week we wrote to Ben, Jack, Sara Jane, Timmy, and Joey. Each student will receive his/her letters at our Valentine Day Party.
Our Valentine’s Day party will take place Tuesday, February 14 @ 2:05-3:10. In past years students have been asked to bring Valentines for each child in the class; however, since the students are already writing thoughtful notes to one another I am asking the kids to NOT bring any extra valentines. I believe the handwritten valentines send your child home smiling for days!
Science
We are working hard during harmonica lessons. The students have learned a great deal from Mr. Milan and are truly enjoying the experience. On Tuesday, February 14th, Mr. Milan and the class will put on a small “Celebration of Learning” for your enjoyment. The celebration is from 9:30-9:55 am in our classroom. This allows for any parent attending the Kindergarten concert to sneak out and see the 10:00 performance. All parents/grandparents are welcome If you would like to attend, RSVP to my email by February 12.
Parent Teacher Conference sign up is scheduled to open on Tuesday, January 31 @ 7:00am. Time slots go fast!
Important Dates:
Field Trip: Tuesday, January 31st @ 9:00-12:15
Harmonica Celebration: Tuesday, February 14 @ 9:30-9:55
Valentine’s Day Party: Tuesday, February 14 @ 2:05-3:05
Today was Evie’s last day. We will miss her dearly and wish her the best of luck in her new journey! Good luck and safe travels to France!
Have a relaxing weekend!
