Math
We began Module 3, The focus is understanding place value up to 1,000. Many students have yet to grasp place value with tens and ones. This would be a great time to pull out the ten frame cards sent home in the beginning of the year and practice skip counting forwards and backwards by tens off the decade. For example:
,Forwards: 4, 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, 74, 84, 94, 104, 114, 124 etc….(count over the hundred)
Backwards: 74, 64, 54, 44, 34, 24, 14, 4
In Module 3, we will be counting forwards/backwards off the decade in the hundreds. Next week, your child will bring home a set of 100 frames. You can use the 100 cards in addition to the tens and ones to count forwards/backwards. If you happen to have misplaced your child’s ten frame cards, send me a quick note and I can send home a new set.
I discovered an educational app for iPads to assist in practicing math facts. It is called “Find Sums”, and differentiates for your child’s needs. Many students still need to practice on how to decompose numbers 6-9. Once your child has grasped those numbers, he/she may move up to decomposing 10 all the way to 20. Another great app is called “MathSplashBingo”. If you have any questions about what number your child should specifically practice, please send me a quick email and I would be happy to provide more information.
Reading
This week we continued our focus on Folktales. We read a fractured version of “Jack and the Bean Stalk” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” We will continue to work on the following strategies to enhance our comprehension: “Finding Story Elements”, “Compare and Contrast two texts” along with “Character Analysis.” Talk about your favorite characters and what he or she is like on the inside. Ask questions like, “How do you know this about the character?” “Can you make a connection with the character?”
Homework:
I believe the importance of homework in second grade is not only to reinforce skills, but to teach responsibility. Lincoln’s theme this month is responsibility. Posted all over Lincoln School are “How to be responsible” posters thanks to Mrs. Payton. Each day, we discuss what “responsibility” means in regards to school and social situations.
This week we discussed how important it is to complete our homework and turn it into the teacher who assigned it. Another point of discussion was if, by chance, the homework is not done, how to resolve the issue. A few possibilities we discussed were:
Wake up earlier in the morning and complete it before school
-or -
write Mrs. Meyers a note/email explaining why the homework was not completed.
I emphasized to the children that sometimes things come up, we get sick etc… so homework cannot be completed, but it is important to notify your teacher why instead of leaving it blank and turning it in.
I truly believe emphasizing “homework independence” as I call it, better prepares your child for future grades. By working together, we can help your child be an “independent student” by the end of second grade.
Today, we started “Wows and Worries!” Ask your child about this fun activity this weekend!
