It’s May and with only 4 weeks left, we still have much to study and accomplish! Can you believe our last day of school will be Thursday, June 8?
On Tuesday, May 23rd and Wednesday, May 24th the students will take The Measure of Academic Progress Test (MAP). The purpose of the MAP is to show student growth throughout the year. It’s a snapshot of your child’s ability, but remember it is just a snapshot! I believe your child’s everyday work demonstrates their true ability. If I remember right scores will go home at the end of the year or in early summer.
Reading & Writing
Poetry Coffeehouse will take place Tuesday, June 6 @ 9:30-10:30. Please RSVP if you plan to attend. Also, I ask all parents to bring a favorite poem to share with the class. It may be a favorite poem from your childhood or current poem. The children love to hear their parents share, too!
Reading
Throughout the next three weeks, the students will learn the strategy “Synthesizing a text.” This strategy teaches the students to stop and question their understanding and change their thinking and predictions as the story unfolds. We will read many book by our favorite author, Patricia Polacco and focus on synthesizing the text. In addition, discuss theme and author’s purpose to enhance the students’ comprehension.
Writer’s Workshop
Next week, the students will begin to write Poetry. They are already excited for the Poetry Coffeehouse!
Field Day
Field Day will take place Thursday, June 8. As a class we will have an outside picnic on the Lincoln field. All parents are welcome to join us for lunch at 11:25 am out on the field. Make sure to bring blankets to sit on! The children will then play organized games all afternoon. Don’t forget to dress your child in their TYE DYE t-shirt (coming soon is information about the t-shirt)
End of the Year
I will send home an end of the year newsletter with ideas to use over the summer. Keep an eye out for it in your child’s Friday Folder sometime during the last two weeks of school.
Please make sure your child comes with a cleaned out book bag each day during the last week of school. He/she will be taking home many supplies and work completed throughout the year.
Important Dates:
Early Dismissal: Friday, May 26
No school: Monday, May 29
Poetry Coffeehouse: Tuesday, June 6 @ 9:30-10:30 pm (please RSVP-don’t forget to bring a copy of your favorite childhood poem!)
