I can’t believe next week is May, and with only 6 weeks left, we still have much to study and accomplish! Important events discussed in this newsletter: MAP Testing, Field Day, and our Poetry Coffeehouse.
Reading & Writing
Our current read aloud is “The Cricket in Times Square.” The students are continuing to strengthen their ability summarize the most important part and ask and answer questions.
In addition, to our read aloud comprehension work we will be reading and writing poetry over the next few weeks. It’s one my favorite units to complete in second grade. After a wonderful year together we share our poetry at the second grade culmination celebration, “The Poetry Coffeehouse.” The coffeehouse will take place Tuesday, June 6 @ 9:30-10:30 in my room. Save the date! More details to come in the next newsletter.
MAP Testing will take place during the week of May 15 - May 19th.The students will take a math and reading test that week. Please make sure your child has a healthy and energizing breakfast on those two days!
Math
The students are working hard learning inches, feet, and yards. The rest of the month, we will come back to studying 3 digit addition and subtraction. Last year I attended a wonderful math conference and was recently reminded of the profound learning that occurred. Here is a short note to always keep in mind about math facts. Math fluency should not be taught using memorization, but instead taught discovering and experimenting with efficient strategies to solve the problem quickly. Through consistent discussion and use of efficient strategies, the facts can then be recalled quickly. There are multitude of strategies and the ultimate goal is for your child to be a flexible and mental mathematician!
Writer’s Workshop
I am truly amazed at the growth each child has made this year as a writer. This week, we started our book nomination writing and the children are utilizing such powerful language to persuade the judges to pick their book at the award winner! They will be sharing their top letter on seesaw in the upcoming weeks.
Social Studies
The mystery state this week was...LOUISIANA! The students love this activity and love learning all about our country!
