Reading
We just began one of my favorite read alouds of the year, The Cricket in Times Square. This novel ties in well with our study of Insects.
The past two week the kids have participated in a series study. They were assigned a series and read at least two different books from the series. The kids are absolutely loving it! We have discussed the characters and settings in the different books and talked similarities and differences. Next week, they will share their learning of their series study with the class. We have some new found lovers of the Mercy Watson series and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series!
Fun Tip: Finding a series this summer reading and talking about what you have noticed in the books will be a great way to keep your child’s reading skills strong!
Writing
Wow, do these students have strong opinions about books! The students are working incredibly hard on their opinion writing. They are writing letters to classmates, grandparents, friends and maybe even you about their feelings towards a book, character, or favorite part. They are learning how to organize their letter with a lead, opinion, evidence and restating their opinion. Hopefully you will receive a letter sooner or later!
Math
Students are continuing to practice counting money, making change, and showing different ways to make change. We will spend the next week or two working on this concept. Many children are struggling distinguishing the nickel from the quarter. Paying close attention to the front and back side of each coin, along with the size difference will help the each child gain a stronger understanding of the coins. There is an app called, Coin Math. This is a wonderful app to utilize at home for practice!
Science
Our insects have arrived! We have over 50 insects in our room right now, I know you are all jealous of me! Currently, most all of our insects are in the Larva stage and luckily three have entered the pupa stage! Hopefully in the next few weeks we will witness form into a pupa and then into an adult. At that point, we will discover what our insect’s identity!
This week’s Mystery State is Delaware! Did you know Delaware was our first colony to become a state!
Book Order - Due Friday, 4/21 Place your order online at Scholastic.
Have a wonderful and relaxing 3 day weekend!
