Time flies when you are having fun! Wow, we are having fun! Valentine’s Day writing, Harmonica, biographies, and expert books.
Math
We continue to work on two and three digit addition and subtraction. We are sharing different strategies and becoming very comfortable at reading a problem and knowing which strategy to utilize. Also, the children are learning there are many different ways to solve a problem and it doesn’t have to be done the same way as his/her partner! See our math strategies page under Homework/Forms.
Reading
We have spent the past few weeks reading about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abe Lincoln. Currently, the students chose a famous black american and began working on their Black American Museum Exhibit. The students are learning how to record their schema, ask questions, and write new learning. While reading with your child at night, continue to strengthen his/her comprehension by asking him/her to infer the meaning of unknown words and ask/answer questions while reading.
Writing
Over the past two weeks, the students wrote a valentine to a person of the day. During this writing we are learning how to correctly write a letter and how to compliment a friend. The children will open all the letters on Tuesday, Feb. 14. They are bursting with excitement to read the letters! Just a friendly reminder, no valentines are needed this year! The valentines being written will leave your child smiling for days! Next week is Random Acts of Kindness! Empathy is a big word in our classroom. Here are a few things that we discuss in our classroom.
Caring = EMPATHY = feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling
Thank you to PTO for helping us with Harmonica. We truly appreciate their generosity! The kids worked very hard over the last five weeks learning the “Harmonica Basics.” They are ready to show off their skills. Don’t forget the celebration is coming up on Tuesday, February 14 @ 9:30. It will be over by 9:55 so all the Kindergarten parents can head to straight to the Kindergarten concert @ 10:00. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
Today, a February Scholastic Book Order went home today. Don’t forget to order Scholastic books online! All orders are due by Friday, 2/24. Login information is on my website underneath forms!

On Tuesday, February 28 @ 10:00 we will head to Fullersburg Woods for our Working World Field Trip to experience how maple syrup is made. We will eat a late lunch at Lincoln around 1:00 upon arrival back at school. I am in need of 1 volunteer for this field trip. Please let me know if you are interested!

Caring = EMPATHY = feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling
- Look at a person’s face and body for clues
- Listen to their words and how they say them
- Think about the other person’s point of view
- Imagine how the other person feels
- Ask, “How can I help?”
- Think, “What is a kind thing to say?”
